WHAT THEY LOST: Near will lose his ability to avoid being around people. In other words, after about a day or two maximum of hiding in his room, he will find himself either making arrangements to meet a person or just venturing out and wandering around until he meets someone. Near’s canon self is generally antisocial and feels safer when hidden away, so this will definitely bother him quite a bit as it keeps recurring.

PERSONALITY: Above all else, Near is two things: a genius and extremely calm. Regardless of what happens, Near does not react thoughtlessly or impulsively. He never allows his actions to be controlled by emotion. He seems completely capable of separating his own emotions from his actions. He is highly analytical and results oriented. Near has excellent intuition, which, along with his remarkable deductive reasoning abilities, gives rise to his ability to question others with very fruitful results and assemble pieces of any case like a puzzle. Near is also relentless in his questioning and in his logic. He is never willing to concede anything for the sake of tactfulness or politeness. He has an acute eye for detail and meticulous methods. He is one to work out all the possibilities and plan his course only after much thought. Much of the time he appears indifferent, and sometimes even inattentive to whatever thing of importance is going on, even though this is far from the case. He is content to quietly work on his puzzles and play with his toys much of the time, but when he speaks, he speaks with confidence, directness, a lack of concern about how tactful he is, and quiet leadership. He has a dry wit on occasion. Near is highly self-aware when it comes to his own abilities, able to evaluate his attributes objectively and accept that he lacks some things. He also has no difficulty evaluating the abilities of others, even to the point of admitting that Mello has some attributes that he does not, and that these would be useful in solving the Kira case.

Near possesses a sense of justice. He works within the confines of the law, attempting to follow his sense of right and wrong. However, in the interest of solving the case (and clearly in the interest of the greater good), Near is willing to resort to any means necessary up to the very edge of the law. He will lie without flinching and resort to trickery/barely legal methods if that is what is required to bring the criminal to justice.

In many ways, Near’s personality is quite paradoxical. While his intelligence and his ability to view things objectively give him a unique maturity few ever possess, he is in many ways quite childlike. He is immature socially and generally reclusive, to the point of seldom ever going outside, though he will travel to places/venture outside when it is necessary. He is aware that he fears going outside (this is a rational fear due to the danger of being murdered by Kira if his face is seen), and he also does not like the idea of traveling alone. However, he will overcome these fears if the situation requires it. Near is also childlike in having a fondness for puzzles, cards, and toys (especially gundams, legos, and finger puppets). He is not very good at taking care of himself in basic ways, seldom thinking about eating or sleeping or the fundamentals of normal living. Near tends to avoid physical contact, rarely ever touching or being touched by others. He typically wears loose clothing (white or blue) and socks. Near has the habit of curling a lock of hair around his finger, and he tends to sit with only one leg folded. He is very small, thin, and pale, almost an albino with his pale skin and white hair, these attributes making him additionally reminiscent of a child. His expressions range from blank to a wicked (almost demented grin).

In general, Near is detached from other people. He is less prone to cooperation than even L is, and though he is very capable in terms of directing others, he does not concern himself about tact or their feelings. He is focused on the results—solving the case in his way. Though he is generally appreciative of those who assist him, he is not deeply touched by any of them. Near had a past attachment to L, in terms of his admiration and respect for his predecessor. He has an attachment to Mello that extends beyond Mello’s death as well. In addition to being someone whose actions Near cannot fully predict, Mello holds an importance in Near’s eyes as the reason that he will be able to defeat Kira. In spite of the fact that Mello seemed to hate him throughout his life, Near is not bothered by this.
